What is a Community Fridge?
So, what is a Community Fridge?

The first thing to say is that it is NOT a food bank. It’s a fight against food waste. Food near its Best Before date is collected from a wide range of supermarkets (such as Waitrose and Tesco), artisan bakeries (such as Pump Street Bakery in Orford) and even home-grown surplus vegetables from people’s vegetable patches (including the Saxmundham Community Garden).
We even get the odd surprise ..like 20 boxes of tacos or 14 trays of bananas to 'redistribute' and save from the bin! This food is then distributed entirely free at the drop-in sessions.

How does a Community Fridge work?
You don’t need to bring anything or even be registered with us – just turn up! We’re a very friendly bunch and the coffee (sometimes cake) and conversation are free too; we’re hoping to engender a real sense of sharing and Community.
Who supplies the food?
We are currently operating on Monday and Fridays between 10:30 and 11:30am behind The Old Bank building in Saxmundham. The accessway is via an alleyway between The Old Bank and Jennie Jones estate agent. We also have access to the lovely Riverside Gardens too!
When and Where is it held?
A wide range of local businesses support this initiative on a regular basis including...

Tesco,
Waitrose,
The Orford Pump Street Bakery,
Munchy Seeds in Leiston
Harvey&Co in Rendlesham

How can I help?
I work on the days of the drop-in sessions, what can I do?
If you know of a shop which regularly throws away food, then approach them and let them know about us – contact us via the Facebook page. If you’d like to volunteer, you could either help out on the day, carry out food pickup’s, or even bring along surplus produce from your own vegetable patches.

We now have pop-up fridges at the pre-school and primary schools so you will be able to pick up food there
